So the Republicans won’t even negotiate for something that 70%+ of Americans want until the Dems agree to something 25% want. And that very popular hasn’t already been agreed to by a bipartisan committee before Trump rejected, them by Trump himself before his advisors convinced him to go back on his word.

 

I’d say the Rs would never recover from this politically (before 2020), except of course 2/3 of Americans will turn on their TVs tonight to see Fox or Sinclair selling it as the ‘Schumer Shutdown’ and questioning the safety of Americans despite an unaffected military. The degree to which Americans are purposely misinformed by the Republicans and their major organizations (Fox and NRA) would not be out of place in a dictatorship.

Yeah, 40% of cable news viewers regularly watch Fox is what I was saying. And estimating that 2/3 to include people who watch their local broadcast either with or instead of cable (which is more concerning, since I would guess most people think of their local broadcasts as independent of national politics, when the majority are Sinclair owned and have some very conservative stuff mixed in with the “real” local content.

I’m apathetic when it’s yet another right-wing white guy with a military background because those people still supporting Trump are so immune to basic consideration, discussion and reason that it’s hopeless.

 

I get angry when it’s the extremely rare black person (cops need more guns!), a Latino (build the wall!), a Muslim (stop immigration!) or a left-winger (Democrats are the real Nazis!) because the hypocrisy is just too painful. Even though of course in those cases it is almost exclusively a male with legal status and a history of domestic violence and military service.

I saw that on twitter, and found it interesting, and quite frankly, hard to refute if you think about just the facts, and not your personal bias.

 

That said, I'm thinking its probably not just a gun issue. And I fear that such shootings might be in Canada sooner than anyone would want. But at this point, I'm at a loss to explain why these happen in the US, and pretty much nowhere else in the world.

I'm more convinced by the story from Australia, I believe, where they had a high profile mass shooting like 30 years ago, immediately reformed and tightened gun control, and haven't had a mass shooting since.

 

The thing that scares me though, is I think you're right about this shit coming to Canada. Maybe not the shootings, but the other shit. The hatred of immigrants, the overt racism, shit like that. The fringes of the PC parties are already trying to copy Trump's playbook and it feels like it's becoming more and more accepted and mainstream. Like, we ****ing see how disastrous it is there, but people are still trying to copy it. I do have some faith that, as a society, we can learn from the debacle going on in the once great nation to the south. But I fear the divisive politics and whatever power and greed that feeds them will be difficult to overcome.

Not like it is in the US, where there's a line drawn and no one believes a word the other side says, but its slowly trickling here. While I dont necessarily disagree with what you are saying. The notion that you can walk into a store and walk out with an automatic weapon in 20 minutes later is the farthest thing from the truth...Especially in a state like California.

 

Actually I believe Assault weapons are banned for purchase in California.

 

There are waiting periods, licenses, courses...Certain individuals with criminal records, mental issues cant buy guns is my understanding...I could be wrong but buying a gun in California might be more difficult than buying one in Canada..Certain guns anyways..

 

There are multitude of rules and legislations in every state though...

 

While I lean conservative with most of my political beliefs, banning guns, especially assault weapons is a no brainer IMO..Lot of my conservative friends dont agree...

 

When I lived in Canada, I thought you could walk into a Walmart in the US and buy a gun..Its nowhere near reality from what I have learnt..FWIW I cant buy a gun regardless, as I am not a citizen.

 

That doesnt mean i cant buy a gun illegally..I m sure I can..Just like if I wanted to I can go buy some cocaine, without much effort..

 

The gun debate is a lot tougher one then it would seem..I am all for banning them, but is that going to change the problem overnight? I m not sure...
