It is one of the best tournament hold em books I have ever read, and I have most of the supposed "must reads" on the list. Go buy it....

Hey all...I usually don't have a great deal of time to post on this board, but I do lurk quite a bit and thought I would share some of my recent trip to Vegas. So, I had a pretty good year in 2004, including a nice cash in the Aruba WPT event, and I told myself that I would carve out some quid for some WSOP action this year. Not main event quid. mind you, but enough to stake me in a preliminary event or two and hopefully some main event satellites. With that in mind, I decided the NL (event #2) and PL (event #3) events would be good for my calendar, and I set up my travel arrangments a couple of

My "right arm's" 3 seconds of fame:There was a part about half-way through where Mike Matasow was talking about how most amateurs aren't really as good as they think they are, and how he's one of the top 5 players in the world, blah, blah.. Right when he says the line about the amateurs, they show two guys standing up at a table, and then both of them immediately pounding the table in frustration, and shouting explitives after a card is flipped over. To the left side of the picture you can barely see someone doing a "victory fist pump" at the same time they are pounding the table and cursing.T -

I already know who wins and it is NOT Erick Brenes nor is it my sweetie pie Layne. But I am not going to tell the results because I do not want to ruin it for anyone who doesn't know...but at least this guy has a some money when he is free (yeah, that is an obvious hint)Oh... and a lot more would have to happen for me to be extra happy! Sorry, but Mike the Mouth does not win. Brenes beats your dreamboat heads-up. And Mike is already out of the poky.I could have sworn that I read a blog several months ago that stated Mike won... but I just looked it up and I guess I remembered wrong. Didn't Mi -

I'll be watching, just to see if I get some brief TV time when they show the scrubs that missed the final table...I think this could be a great WPT, based on what I saw at the final table. I can tell you that it's a rather unsettling feeling to throw out a preflop raise in order to steal the blinds and antes, and then Layne calls your raise, out of position, and then fires at the pot on the flop. Gulp... -
As I've said in a previous post on this subject, soliciting (and acting on) tax advice from someone other than a tax professional is a quick way to find yourself on the wrong end of an IRS audit. That being said, I am NOT a tax professional, but I have the luxury of having a close friend whose wife works for the IRS (and this stuff is her job, which is scary). There are actually many ways that the IRS can flag your return as suspect, the most common being a drastic difference in your reported income and the sum of the credits to the bank accounts known to your social security number. They don'

who would you fear the most with a big stack?
KennyEarl replied to Scott31's topic in General Poker Forum
About halfway through day 1 of a WPT event, Layne Flack got moved to my table with a HUGE stack, and it was not a pleasant experience. At one point, the table had Layne, Phil Lakk and Carlos Mortensen. Unless you got a premium hand, it was very difficult to accumulate chips. -
Attention Accountants and tax people...need some help!!!

OK..if you have the money sitting in an online account, or Firepay, or something like that, it HAS to get into your bank account somehow. Banks are now required by law to report anytransaction $4,000 or higher (post-9/11 Homeland Security change), so if your intention is to hide money from The Man (bad idea) then it would have to be deposited in smaller batches.Look chappy, according to your post you just raked in $16,500, so suck it up and spend a couple hundred bucks on a really good tax accountant that can help you try to soften the blow. By law, you have to declare your winnings, and I can -

Only follow this advice if you are really curious on how an IRS audit works, and have always wanted to know what they mean by "fines and penalties". -
This reminds me of a funny story that was in an Esquire Magazine article that Jim McManus wrote last summer:He was in a tournament, and at a table with Amarillo Slim when an amateur player and Slim got into a big pot. Slim made a big bet on the river, and the amateur stares him down for like 5 minutes. Finally, Slim looks at him and says, "Son, if you can tell what I got just by staring at me, I'll sh*t in my hat."Unless you are one of the top pros in the game, you are more likely to give something away with the movement of your hands and your betting patterns than anything else.I had the plea

If you're somewhat new to the professional poker scene, this might seem like it's complete BS, but it's actually historically accurate. I doubt Daniel will take the time to comment on this, as it is water under the bridge, but all you really need to do is search the RGP archives at Google and you can follow along fairly easily.I recall one post by Daniel that was just a huge rant, and detailed multiple points on why he thought she was unethical, and basically bad for the game of poker. It's worth the read, if you can find it.Now, as I have understood it, they have somewhat buried the hatchet a

what online players should know before playing live
KennyEarl replied to Mandelbrot's topic in General Poker Forum
I'm curious about this sentence. What is beta? Why do bananas block my beta? And why do I want my beta to be blocked? What else blocks my beta?Is there anything that releases my beta? Are there any circumstances when I would want my beta to be released?I am not a doctor, not do I play one on TV, but I do know a little bit about this.Short answer: Beta blockers are (typically) medications that reduce the workload of the heart and lower blood pressure. They are usually prescribed to relieve angina (a certain type of chest pain) or to treat high blood pressure. One of the banana's many magic qu -

Great Topic....It's been a while, but here's what I remember to be the most challenging, some of which have already been mentioned:* Always take the same amount of time when looking at your hole cards for the first time. A lot of players that haven't played much live action will give away their hand by how long it takes them to check their hand. Your natural reaction when you see a great starting hand is to immediately go for the chips, ans inversely you might stare at a marginal hand a bit too long before taking action. I can't tell you how many times I see this in tournaments where there ar -
I don't quite understand how all of you guys can sit here and nitpick the AQ vs AK play, without knowing ANYTHING about the situation. Certainly AQ can be a marginal hand at times, and other times it can be a very good hand. What were the positions, stack, or blinds? How long were they at the table together, and how much were they mixing it up?It's just like watching TV poker, thinking you know exactly how someone plays based on a few edited hands. It cracks me up how a bunch of guys who probably predominantly play low stakes poker online can critisize a hand between two guys like Raymer and Da
