I was thinking about this more on the way home. Here's the trade off. Conclusion: There's some give and take, but it's great to have a second option for managers that isn't "bring them up and give them a huge raise right away." For weaker teams (like mine) or teams trying to make a playoff push, this immediately allows teams to make their teams better assuming the player would rank on your team as a top 8 forward for example. That's a player that simply never ever got called up in the old system, but will now. With more roster spots filled with some farm players, that also improves the quality of the waiver wire. Less teams will be fighting over the scraps available on the waiver wire, less players will get picked up, meaning there should be more value available. For a top tier team who doesn't need the depth guy, I imagine they will still use the Toewes rule. Good news is, now everyone has better options Link to post Share on other sites

UNLESS you are a really bad team looking to make room on your farm for more picks. I have 10 picks this year and had 12 guys on my farm. Since I just want to load up on prospects I'm calling up two early (Colin White, Jayce Hawryluk) to make room for all 10 picks. Not ideal to call them up this year but I'd rather waste the cap space then lose the picks. Typically though it would be foolish to call them up when rosters are submitted in the off season. Decent and very little effort to achieve that. Hopefully Nashville ditches Rinne and lets Suaros take the reigns, and hopefully Toronto doesn't take 3/4 of the season to get decent goaltending this year. Link to post Share on other sites
