Welcome to the 2014 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final €100,000 Super High Roller

Season 10 of the European Poker Tour is fresh off a record-making stop in Sanremo, Italy, where Team PokerStars Pro Vicky Coren Mitchell topped a field of 556 players to become the first player to ever win two EPT Main Event titles. It was history in the making, but now it's on to bigger things... at least in terms of buy-in.

The 2014 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final, the last stop of the season, kicks off today with the €100,000 Super High Roller from the beautiful Salles des Etoiles room at Le Sporting. This marks the fourth and final Super High Roller of the season after Vitaly Lunkin outlasted 50 other players to win the €50,000 buy-in event in Barcelona; Martin Finger emerged victorious over a 57-entry field to win the £50,000 event in London for £821,000; and Fabian Quoss topped a field of 56 to win the one at the 2014 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure €100,000 buy-in Super High Roller for more than $1.6 million in prize money.

As for this event, last year's tournament attracted 41 players that accounted for nine reentries, which brought the field up to 50 and created a prize pool of €4,851,000. Players in last year's event included Phil Ivey, Antonio Esfandiari, Erik Seidel and Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu, and we're expecting many of them to be in action today.

In fact, tournament officials expect this year’s €100,000 Super High Roller at the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo®Casino EPT Grand Final could rival or even top last year’s event, which was won by online high stakes cash game player Max Altergott. The 23-year-old German took down the prestigious event for a massive €1,746,400 first prize. Altergott will no doubt return looking for a title defense, and for the first time ever a group of Macau high rollers will be in attendance.

All three days of this season’s Super High Roller will be broadcast on EPTLive with the final on April 26 shown cards-up (subject to a one-hour security delay). You can view the entire broadcast schedule here. The PokerNews Live Reporting Team will also be on hand to bring you all the action from both the feature and outer tables over the next three days. Action is set to kick off at Noon local time, which is just over two hours from now. Join us then as we bring you all the action from the start of the 2014 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final.

Players will start with a 250,000 stack and play eight 60-minute levels with no dinner break, which will put an end to the night right around 9 p.m. How many levels there will be played on Day 1 has not yet been made public.

Let's Make a Bet

Posted 54 minutes agoWebjoker • Level 3: 800-1,600, 200 ante

"You're bored huh?" said John Juanda to Elton Tsang who was seated one table behind him. "No, no, no" replied Tsang who did have his hand underneath his chin.

"You can't smoke here, what are you doing here anyway?" asked Juanda. While some people laughed, Tsang remarked that he had quit smoking. "You really?" said Juanda, "Yeah" replied Tsang.

"You want to make a bet?" continued Juanda his question streak. "The bigger the better" snap replied Tsang. "The bigger the better" repeated Tsang after Juanda double checked. "One year of not smoking?" Juanda proposed. "The bigger, the more motivation I have" said Tsang who apparently is on his first day of giving up on smoking.

"Ohh, you're drawing dead" said Juanda. "One bad beat and you're smoking again"

"What about 5 million?" asked Tsang. "Hong Kong?" asked Juanda. "Yeah"

"Ok" confirmed Juanda, "Let's talk about it in the break, the terms and stuff"

Well, there you got it. Just like that they made a bet for HKD 5,000,000 (€467,415/$644,888).

Negreanu Eliminates Selbst

Posted 27 minutes agoHomer • Level 3: 800-1,600, 200 ante

In the first hand he has played, Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu eliminated fellow Team Pro Vanessa Selbst. We're unsure where the money went in but as we arrived at the table Negreanu had made a straight on the river of an ac.gif3c.gif2d.gif10d.gif5h.gif board with 6c.gif4c.gif against Selbst's da.gif9h.gif for a big pot.

How has Phil become so high and mighty that he has warranted this ultra celebrity treatment where even the reporters won't ask him the question that everyone wants to be asked. This Borgata thing is a national news story outside of the poker world, just ask the damn question even if he says no comment. Nobody gives a shit about his chip stack or who's chef he has.

Antonius vs. Negreanu: Only One Will Survive

We big pot just took place between two of the world's most popular players in Daniel Negreanu and Patrik Antonius. It was a hand that would see one of them fall.

It began when the Team PokerStars Pro opened with a raise from middle position and the Finn called from the button. The blinds folded, the flop came down 8s.gif4d.gifas.gif, and Negreanu continued for 15,000. Antonius called, the dealer burned and turned the 8c.gif, and Negreanu bet again, this time 27,000.

Antonius decided to push back with a raise to 105,000, and Negreanu made the call. "Kid Poker" then checked the 6h.gif river and Antonius moved all in for his last 191,000. Negreanu, who was getting a massage, shifted in his chair and began putting together some chips.

Eventually he shrugged and said, "I guess I'll call." Antonius rapped the table and Negreanu then tabled his 8d.gif9d.gif for trips. "I'm really only beating a bluff," Negreanu added. Whether Antonius was bluffing or not remains a mystery as he mucked his hand. The only sure thing was that Negreanu had him beat and scored the knock out.

About a minute after Antonius busted, Australian Jeff Rossiter entered the field and took his seat at the table.

Negreanu the Straight Guy

The board read kc.gif10s.gif5s.gifqd.gif10d.gif and Daniel Negreanu had bet 55,000 into a pot of just under 100,000.

Fabian Quoss was on the receiving end of the bet and didn’t look happy about it. He shook his head for a while and made the call.

Negreanu tabled ah.gifjc.gif for the turned straight which elicited more sighs from Quoss who mucked his hand.

After that hand was over Negreanu was involved in the next hand against Ping San Chan. Phil Ivey was looking over from another table. “I had the nuts. Of course.” Negreanu said about the last hand.

“No man makes more straights than this guy.” Ivey said.

“No man goes for more straights than me.” replied Negreanu, who declared that he was now going to make a straight in this hand with the board reading 4c.gif7c.gif5h.gif and bet 15,000.

Chan raised him to 45,000 and Negreanu plonked down the chips to call. They both checked the turn 5c.gif and river 5s.gif. “I don’t think a straight is winning now.” Negreanu said and Chan agreed.

Chan showed 6h.gif4h.gif and Negreanu won with 6d.gif6c.gif. Negreanu called over to Ivey, “Didn’t make a straight but I won it anyway.”

EPT10 Monaco: The super life of the Super High Rollers

by Howard Swains on April 24, 2014 11:56 AM

Registration for this record-breaking Super High Roller event is open until noon tomorrow, which means you've still got plenty of time to get over here to play.

There will likely be more than a million euros on offer to the winner of this thing, which should probably be incentive enough. But if ever any of the world's top players are in two minds whether to play, the PokerStars concierge service certainly makes it worth their while.

One hundred thousand euros is a lot of wonga, and it earns you a certain degree of respect. It also earns you a pretty decent package of add ons, including your room, food and board while you're in Monaco, and the most luxurious route to the Principality.

To be specific, here's what the Super High Rollers get in addition to their seat in this tournament:

Four nights' accommodation in the Monte Carlo Bay Hotel

€1,000 food and beverage credit on room folio

Free food and drink, including table-side service, during play

Helicopter transfer from Nice to Monaco (or executive car service, if preferred)

Complementary 24-hour taxi service to any destination in Monaco

24-hour concierge service for any requests (dinner reservations, shopping, admin, etc.)

Perhaps better than all the above, Garry Gates, the PokerStars Global VIP Host, will hand over his cellphone number and be available for your beck and call. I have it on very good authority that he's one hell of a wingman.

Gruissem Leads Record-Breaking EPT Grand Final €100,000 SHR

The 2014 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final kicked off in Monaco on today with Day 1 action from the €100,000 Super High Roller. Last year this very tournament attracted 41 unique entries that accounted for nine reentries, and this year the field was even larger as 48 different players generated 11 reentries to bring the total field up to 59. That number could go up as registration remains open until the state of Day 2.

Speaking of the second day of play, 37 players survived the night after eight one-hour levels of play, including Philipp Gruissem, who emerged as the chip leader with 1,038,000. Others who bagged up big stacks include Ping San Chan (938,000), Daniel Negreanu (915,000), and Ole Schemion (847,000).

"It's been really, really rough for me. I had some trouble to focus, I really had to drink a lot of coffee (laughs) but it helped," Gruissem told PokerNews at the conclusion of play. "Mike [McDonald] put me in a really tough spot, but I got it right this time and I'm really happy. Looking forward to tomorrow."

The first elimination of the day happened in Level 3 (800/1,600/200) on a {6-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} flop when Vladimir Troyanovskiy checked and Sam Trickett bet 8,200. Troyanovskiy check-raised to 21,000 and Trickett made the call to see the {8-Diamonds} on the turn. The Russian bet 27,000, Trickett again made the call, and the river was the {4-Hearts}. Troyanovskiy checked, and Trickett thought for a moment before moving all in. snap-called and tabled a flush with the {q-Hearts}{j-Hearts}, which bested Trickett's {a-Clubs}{10-Spades}.

Upon seeing his opponent's cards, Trickett, slightly cross with himself, said, "That's what I thought you had. Then I went all in." Trickett exited the tournament floor and was not seen again on Day 1.

A little while later, Negreanu late registered the tournament, and in his very first hand, he eliminated fellow Team Pro Vanessa Selbst. Negreanu had made a straight on the river of an {A-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} board with {6-Clubs}{4-Clubs} and Selbst ended up shoving with the {A-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}. Selbst opted to reenter shortly thereafter.

Others who busted and reentered the event included Justin Bonomo, Chun Lei Zhou, Lo Shing Fung, Tobias Reinkemeier, Igor Kurganov, Antonio Esfandiari, Phil Ivey, Max Altergott and Daniel Colman. Colman reentered twice and is the only player to have €300,000 invested in the tournament.

Meanwhile, a slew of players busted and opted not to reenter. In addition to Trickett, Steve O'Dwyer, Jonathan Duhamel, Elton Tsang, Mike Watson, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Senh Ung, Martin Finger, Dario Sammartino, Haralabos Voulgaris, and Patrik Antonius all fell and did not return. Of course all of them can fire another bullet before the start of Day 2, which some are expected to do.

As for Gruissem, he got a good deal of his chips in an interesting hand that took place in Level 5 (1,200/2,400/300). The PokerNews Live Reporting Team picked up the action on the river of a {J-Spades}{A-Spades}{9-Clubs}{K-Clubs}{10-Spades} board, when “Philbort” bet 55,000 against Chun Lei Zhou, the latter having previously called bets on the flop and turn.

Zhou had been thinking for a minute before he moved all in for about 240,000 and Gruissem called instantly. Zhou looked sheepish as he turned over {6-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} having tried to double-float the German. It wouldn't have mattered what he had though, Gruissem tabled {K-Spades}{Q-Spades} for a Royal Flush.

"Yeah, I made a Royal Flush pretty early on and I got somebody to bluff me," Gruissem told PokerNews. "Well, that didn't work as you can imagine. Finally a Royal Flush got paid."

Day 2 action will get underway at Noon local time on Friday, and the plan will be to play down to the final table of eight. The final numbers and official payouts should become available shortly after the start of play, and of course the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will bring you them, as well as all the action, from the 2014 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final €100,000 Super High Roller.

Esfandiari Doubles Through Negreanu

Daniel Negreanu opened for 22,000 and got a call from Chistoph Vogelsang in the small blind. Antonio Esfandiari was in the big blind and he made it 70,000.

The action was back on Negreanu who raised him announcing that this was his first five-bet of the tournament. Vogelsang folded and Esfandiari moved all in pretty quickly and was just as quickly called by Negreanu.

Negreanu ah.gifkd.gif

Esfandiari jh.gifjc.gif

Esfandiari’s tournament life was on the line but as the cards ran out qs.gif5s.gif5h.gif10c.gif6h.gif he dodged Negreanus’ outs and doubled up his stack at the Team PokerStars Pro’s expense.

"Once in a Blue Moon"

On a flop of kc.gifda.gif4c.gif, Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu bet 36,000 from the hijack and received a call from Team Online's Isaac Haxton, who was on the button. The 6s.gif turn saw Haxton call a bet of 85,000, and then the qd.gif completed the board on the river.

Negreanu fired out 210,000, and then Haxton asked for Negreanu to show.

"Why? I never do that," Negreanu laughed. He then tabled the js.gif7s.gif much to the amusement of the entire table. "Once in a blue moon you have to steam."

The Table Talk Begins

Up at the feature table, Ole Schemion opened for 35,000 under the gun and Daniel Negreanu called from the button. Fabian Quoss came along from the big blind, and three players watched the flop come down {q-Hearts}{10-Spades}{4-Hearts}. Quoss checked, Schemion bet 50,000, and two calls followed.

When the {3-Spades} appeared on the turn, Quoss checked for a second time and Schemion bet 140,000. Only Negreanu called and it was heads-up action to the {8-Clubs} river. Schemion slowed down with a check, and Negreanu snap-bet 225,000.

Schemion began to think, and that's when Negreanu started to talk. "Kid Poker" began to list hands with which he would bet, which drew the ire of the dealer. Negreanu defended himself that he didn't state what he had, just merely a range. It brought a laugh from everyone, including Schemion, who ended up making the call.

Negreanu admitted that he missed a straight and showed the {k-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}. Schemion then tabled the {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs} to win the pot.

"I was pretending I have {j-}{9-}," Negreanu said.

Daniel Negreanu Eliminated by Lo Shing Fung

Lo Shing Fung limped in for 20,000 from under the gun plus one. Daniel Cates completed from the small blind and action was on Daniel Negreanu in the big blind. He shoved allin for 502,000.

Lo didn't fold so quickly and really thought about it. Negreanu made for some theatre but Lo wasn't impressed. Lo made the call, Cates folded quickly.

Lo Shing Fung: {A-Clubs}{K-Spades}

Daniel Negreanu: {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}

The {9-Spades}{2-Hearts}{10-Hearts} on the flop was of no use to anyone, besides some back doors for Negreanu. The {Q-Spades} on the turn made an up and down for Negreanu but the last Team PokerStars Pro missed with the {10-Spades} on the river.

Who Will Take the $1.8 Million First Place Prize?

he best players in the world, no exception, came to Monaco for the 2014 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final €100,000 Super High Roller. The cash game guys that battle each other online for the highest stakes, and the players that won the most money in tournaments all over the world, everybody came to the sovereign city-state on the French Riviera.

Phil Ivey was talking to Patrik Antonius, Daniel Negreanu chatted it up with Jonathan Duhamel. Antonio Esfandiari squared off with Vanessa Selbst and Isaac Haxton went to battle with the German High Rollers Tobias Reinkemeier, Fabian Quoss and Philipp Gruissem.

All those guys didn't make it to the final table though. The 62 entries (50 unique, 12 reentries) made for a €6,015,240 prize pool and just eight players remain right now. They're in the money but not all are guaranteed to make a profit just yet. Though they take home a minimum of €241,000, that would still leave Daniel Colman €59,000 short as he bought back in twice after busting his first €100,000 bullet on Day 1.

The final table is dominated by the group of Asian business men who made their way to the Super High Roller on European soil for the first time. Paul Phua, Lo Shing Fung and Richard Yong proved they can play with the best here in the Principality of Monaco. Flanking the Asian business men are the Americans with Cates, Colman and Busquet all still in contention. To complete the final table there's short stack Igor Kurganov and of course Ole Schemion. We say 'of course' as he's in the form of his life and he might just be the best no-limit hold'em tournament player in the world at the moment. Schemion is on fire with huge cashes everywhere. He won the €10,000 High Roller in Sanremo just two weeks ago, and won the €10,000 satellite to this very €100,000 event to keep himself in form.

The seating is as followed:

Seat Player Country Chips

1 Dan Cates United States 2,341,000

2 Richard Yong China 1,301,000

3 Olivier Busquet United States 1,038,000

4 Rono Lo China 4,558,000

5 Daniel Colman United States 1,398,000

6 Igor Kurganov Russia 261,000

7 Ole Schemion Germany 2,818,000

9 Paul Phua Malaysia 1,785,000

The eight finalists will start at 1 p.m. local time. The tournament coverage will be on a one-hour delay as the live stream will be cards up, and they will battle it out for the following prizes:

Place Prize

1 €1,804,000

2 €1,305,000

3 €842,300

4 €637,600

5 €493,340

6 €385,000

7 €307,000

8 €241,000
