Interesting hand i played guys, i would like to pick all of your brains as to whether i should be going broke in this spot! :icon_wall:

Right, so here it is. Im playing a £50 f/o down the local casino and what is basically a 90 man SNG. 7,500k starting stack.

We have 27 players left, tables have just been condensed down to 3 and i was moved into a new table after busting someone. From looking around, it seems like i am very close to the chip lead as i carry over 43/44kish and notice one player directly to my right with a very similar stack. Apart from this nobody can cause me any serious pain xD. So i sit down straight into the BB and get dealt :ah:kd first hand of the new table, and now for the hand action.

Blinds are at 400/800 so we have over 50BB's and the whole table folds to the SB who is the other monster stack in the game who limps in. I make a small raise up to 2200 honestly expecting a fold. To my surprise he pulls the trigger and 3 bets preflop to around the 6-7k mark. Im intrigued as to what people would do at 2 stages in this hand, this being the first stage. My read on the player was that he was making a move on me, it had all the hallmarks of him thinking my raise was to just pick up the pot. So anyways, going with my thoughts on the hand i made another raise to convince him i could fold to a 5 bet & 4 bet to an amount where flatting would be ridiculous on his part, somewhere around the 15k mark. At which point he put the whole lot in and now this being the second stage as to whether we should be calling off here with :ah:kd when even a fold is leaving me a 35BB-40BB stack.

Would be very grateful for any feedback from all you tournament players out there....oh and btw he had :as:ac !!

dont ever consider folding ak blind vs blind. this is a cooler, theres absolutely nothing you can do differently.

and if you think he's making a move on you, do something to give him enough rope to hang himself.

and for god sakes don't 4bet so you can fold with ak blind vs blind.

If you're going to 4bet/fold, why not just call his 3bet with a high value hand in position when you are very likely ahead?

Dumb play 4b to 15k and folding.

I don't like the 4 bet here either...

A major problem here for us giving input is that it's a live game and you said this:

"My read on the player was that he was making a move on me, it had all the hallmarks of him thinking my raise was to just pick up the pot."

I feel you should be going with your gut reads on people 100%, so really this hand is more about trying to assess what it was that gave you this read.

From your post it might suggest that you're caught up with the scenario and read of your own hand, and your read on the player should be more about information he's giving off...

If you're reading based on scenario, you're thinking it's folded to you in the blinds and he limped so you should be raising a wide range, he must be picking up on that and making a move... basically you leveled yourself into a bad read.

If you're reading based on his play, you'd consider that the SB at this stage in the tourney should be giving your stacksize a lot of respect, his limp can only read as weakness until his 3 bet. As a fellow tall stack, you have a massive edge with position and there's very little value in getting out of hand with a 3 bet light... I believe on the 3 bet you should be looking at the player for signs of strength here rather than leveling and thinking that your hand can be read as weak.

Once you read the 3 bet as strong, you can bump it up to VERY strong when you now remember that he limped first... The limp takes away a lot of the lower range values of Strong hands (mid PP's, Ax's, because they are all open raises)... there are a ton of weak hands that can be limp reraised, but there are very few strong hands

All that said, AK is a pretty big hand in this spot and folding shouldn't be considered to the 3 bet without a very specific read...

**Next time don't post his holding

Because it's live I might take a pretty crazy line... I might fold to his 3 bet showing the K implying it's my high card and asking if he has it beat (yes I know I just said folding shouldn't be considered).... I have my reasons lol and wouldn't suggest it on a strategy board... but had to put it out there because it's in the back of my mind...

I call the reraise, see a flop and lay it down If I miss... If you hit a k or A its rough but otherwise you can get away from it. Just because its bvb doesn't mean he can't have a hand. If he's close to chip lead and is pushing that hard vs one of the only stacks that can cripple him its probably a monster imo.

  • 2 weeks later...

Couple things here. Your raise is perfectly fine pre-flop, but when he re-raises here, I am just flat calling with A-K. It's not a made hand and that's what a lot of people seem to forget. I'd rather have 2-2 and catch a set in this position obviously then A-K and catch a King on the flop. Not to mention with the flat call I have the ability to play the hand in position. It's a bit of a cooler like some people have pointed out, but I definitely disagree with them getting on you about folding. It's a bad play to fold A-K after you have 4 Bet ... but it's not always a bad play to let A-K go. Now, yes - folding after you have re-popped it is a losing play - but that's why you should have just flatted, and not re-opened your pot. Your only 2 plays were to push after his initial re-raise at that point or to just flat (which is what you should have done). A-K isn't a hand you really want to be calling 44K off pre-flop with blinds being at 400/800. I feel like a lot of players get into trouble with big Aces because they love to get into those race situations. You had position on this hand and that's the key. If you flat, and the board comes 5-8-10, it's really easy to get away from A-K. If you're saying you re-raised and then folded after he shoved, not a good move. Next time you should just flat and play your position in the pot.
