Gospel Of Judas

Recommended Posts

I watched the National Geographic bit on the Gospel of Judas last night. The show has a some interesting commentators. I liked Elaine Pagels a lot, even more on film than in her books. She seems to be a very honest scholar. Ehrman is good, too, but he clearly has more of an axe to grind. The political importance of blaming the Jews rather than the Romans for the crucifixion in the canonical gospels gets a good treatment. The document is a later gospel in the gnostic tradition, with Judas portrayed as a hero for helping Jesus fulfill his plan for physical death. It is an interesting dilemma. Jesus sees the betrayal coming, so it's not like Judas is thwarting anything by playing his part.
