Edit: I meant to post this in strat. Ok. so as some of you know, i'm playing 1/2NL with a junk roll.its live, so its a bit different, softer games etc...My question is, I've always been the type to set a time frame on sessions. never a win or lose bracket.Lately, my strategy has been, double up and leave. or if i'm there for 5 hours. leave. depending on what comes first. Its BR building strategy IMO.The past week my BR has given me some breathing room, and i'm comfortable playing these stakes, and buying in for the max.however, i'm still not comfortable playing if i'm up a buyin or two. In the past, I could be up 500 @ 1/2 and still want more. now i start to think about my BR and if i'm up 300 after an hour, i start to think, perhaps i should leave.I've always considered this an ok thing to do, but is it a leak in my profit? Does anyone think that its acceptable to play this way while i build my BR as long as it doesnt become my regular style?

To me it sounds fine if you're playing with a short roll. You def shouldn't be playing if you're uncomfortable with that much on the table. If the games are that good, maybe cashout and get back on the list so you can come back with your original buy in?

The "real" answer to this is, it is a mistake to leave a game that has good potential for profit if you are feeling alert and on your game, regardless of whether you are up or down or by how much.It is a mistake to stay in a game that isn't profitable or if you aren't alert, regardless of whether you are up or down or by how much.My answer: if you feel good about the win, and don't feel good about risking it, go home =)

Right, I feel the exact same way.Today, i was alert, playing great, and had good reads on everyone at the table. But i was up almost 2 buyins early, and started to think that this is a good session for a mid week day session.I think if it was a saturday night, i might be more inclined to stay.

you could do what chris ferguson said. if at any point the chips on the table represent more than %10 of your total roll, leave the game.

If there are weak players stay as long as you feel you can play well. If there are strong players go ahead and leave whenever you feel is right (time, fatigue). When Im playing cash games I will play 16 hour sessions if lives ones are playing long.

The second you start thinking about the money you should leave. It's that simple. Maximize profit when you're comfortable with your roll. Then bend over, and take off your pants.....very slowly.
this is true. The money isnt a lot, but Its the stress of knowing "I have to build before i can really play" Caleb with a real response in general? i must be at the nexxus of the Universe

She was faking. she told me later that she felt she was in a version of Mallrats. except instead of Ben Afleck it was like Matt Damon. I know.... ouch.

It's helpful to think of it in terms of a percentage of your roll. I realize you're comfortable on a short roll, so say you start with 10% or so on the table, and that's comfortable for you, if it gets to xx%, as you win a few pots and all of a sudden you're up to 500 and your roll is now 2400, you're playing with >20% on the table, so you might want to leave, etc. It's still not a way to maximize your return, which is what we strive for when playing with a full BR, but for a short BR, it may be a good strategy.

On a completely spun side-note, do you know much about the downtown/Old Port area in Montreal? I am strongly considering/researching making a real estate investment there.

This is live NL we're talking about here right? I play 2/3 and 3/5 mostly with a 100 and 200 buy ins and 150/300 when I go to the felt. Personally, I I think it really depends on your style of play. For me, I play ultra tight with my first buy in, then when I get a couple hundred I open up and start to play much more aggressive, trying to play position poker, stealing and grabbing as much dead money as there is out there. With this style, about once a week or so, I have a big day, usually leaving with 700-1500. If you play one way, all the time, then I don't think its a bad idea to leave.I've played a lot of live NL, and I've built up a bankroll probably fours times now. I make a good living doing what I do outside of poker, so often I make some money, then buy something, or pay a bill, or invest the money I make from poker, and then start from scratch again. There are two things I've learned doing this.1. Only play, when you're feeling good and confident. If you're annoyed at the low lifes at your table, or the fact that you're card dead, or the annoying cocktail waitress's or whatever, just leave. Don't wait until the button comes around, just leave. Most of the time I'm laid back and in a good mood, but if I play 4-5 times in a week **** starts to get on my nerves. The casino is like any friend or girlfriend, she's great when you see her a couple times a week, but if you see her every day, most likely she gets on your nerves.2. When you're down a buy in or two, and you've been there for 4-6 hours and plan to leave soon, just leave without doing anything stupid to try and get unstuck. I don't know how many times, I've had a card dead, unlucky session, and I'm about to leave and I get pocket 8's or something and try to win a pot, and lost my last 50-80 bucks. Once I stopped doing this, my winrate almost doubled.3. Keep your mouth shut. I often let on that I'm a good player by talking about hand, decisions, etc. When you're playing with average to below average players, it really hurts you if you let them know you know what you're doing. When I play higher limits, this doesn't matter as much because most of the people there have ABC, tight aggressive style figured out. (Whether they play that way, is another story....)But the simple answer to your question is, when you're playing good and up a couple buy ins early, don't leave if you're playing well, that stack will allow you to make even more money. Good luck Sir.

Yes, quite possibly. I think after your whole live grinding goes well we should get a place together.

hahaha, well. its funny you say that.. I'm planning to quit poker in the fall for a month. going to live in australia and work for a promotion company in surfers paradise.(its a, life to do. thing. i figure this is my best chance to see and travel australia)when i come back, hopefully i'll have my 10k + roll. (if this challenge works) and I'l be moving near a profitable casino. BC seems like the best choice, followed by Niagara.Montreal has no poker.I'm not trying to TP/MM, just want to make sure i get this out of the way, so 20 years from now, i dont look back and say. what if? although, I already do say, what if.. as in, what if i tried this 2 years ago when i wanted too.
