Wtc Victim Remains

Recommended Posts

5 years after the fact the searh for victims remains goes on, revived after the "shocking" find of some bone fragments on rooftops near the site a few months ago. I really dont understand the obsession for body parts long after someone is killed.

I think there are a few reasons. For one, being able to bury the dead (or what remains of them) is a way to get some closure from losing a loved one. It also allows some people to still feel connected to their deceased loved ones. If you have a grave or urn that you know contains your loved one, it can allow you to think that your loved one isn't completely gone as you can still visit them. I'm sure there are other reasons too.

Our society's obsession with all of that is traditional. Yes, it doesn't make sense... and yes, it's all emotional, a waste of money, time, and resources... but whatever. People can be free to do what they want.

Admittedly, most of the things we do for the dead we really do for ourselves. At the very least, it's good for the psychological well-being of some people.

It seems to be pretty positive, psychologically, for most people in this society. Ours is one that reveres our dead. There's no logical reasoning behind it, but, hey, if it makes people feel good ;-) (just a setup for my favorite fundamentalists)

I don't have a problem with it but letting go would probably be more healthy for those involved, though. That's tough to do. I would have a hard time if it was my loved ones yanked away in that fashion.
