How to play in Agressive Blind Multi-table tournys???

Recommended Posts

I play in a 20 person multi table tourny usually twice a month and we usually start out with 130 in chips. The guy who hosts this doesnt like the games to drag on, so he keeps the blinds pretty agressive. We start out at 2,4 and blinds go up every 10 minutes. After 5,10 they jump to 10,15 to 15,30 to 30,60 and so on... It's impossible to keep track of your opponents and your cards with such crazy blinds breathing down your neck. Playing Top Tier hands can only get you so far before you have to make some moves or catch some cards... Anyone have some intelligent advice for an intermediate Hold 'em player???

With blind structures like this you have to play fast and hard. The tourny I do every thursday night has blinds that double every 15 min. Usually it's a little less than 1 orbit then the blinds go up. I like to take lots of flops in the first couple levels and get a big stack quickly. This tends to get me in a little bit of trouble because I am normally very aggressive anyways, but when I do hit a couple hands and pull off a good bluff or two I usually make it pretty far.

One, the faster the blinds go up, the less advantage the skilled player has over the unskilled one. It's not mitigated completely, of course, but it's lessened. If that doesn't seem obvious consider that a tournamanet with a blind structure of 1/2 your stack the first hand then 2X your stack the second hand isn't going to involve a great deal of skill where a tournament where the blinds are 1/10000 of a stack and increase once a day will rely more on skill (and take months to finish, but that's not the point).Because of this you need to be more willing to gamble with hands PF even if you're fairly sure you can outplay most of the people after the flop. Once the blinds begin to approach 1/10th of your stack size, you should be pushing all in pre-flop with hands you might otherwise want to see a flop with, like 88-JJ and you should be pretty much folding all hands that rely on implied stack odds like 56s. What you want as an end result is to be able to steal at least 1 set of blinds an orbit to keep yourself afloat and to be more likely to get action when you catch a serious all in hand. If you rely on waiting for good starting hands you'll loose. You need to be willing to make reads and take shots at the blinds or weak raises PF. If it's folded to you on the button you should be pushing with any two cards at least 1/3 of the time. With a blind structure like that you have to rely on constatnly attacking. If you manage to build a big stack relative to the blind size, then you can utilize gap theory and make some pre-flop limps looking to outplay people post flop. When in doubt, attack in these games. If it's a close decision between calling and folding PF, push all in.Good luck!
