Growing up, I was surrounded by kids whose greatest ambition was to one day collect a pension. I didn't intend to spend my whole life dreaming about floating on a government safety net.One day, when Nixon was talking on the television, my liberal friend Artie translated bits of what he was saying. As I recall, he spoke about free enterprise, about less government and taxation, about the need for a strong military.I asked what party Nixon was from. Artie said he was an imbecile Republican. "Then I will be an imbecile Republican," I said.I've been writing my memoirs recently, and looking back at how I came to my political identity has reminded me that this election cycle marks my 44th year as a Republican. I can't imagine being anything else.That's why I am so bothered by the party's recent loss of two up-and-coming Republicans: San Diego mayoral candidate Nathan Fletcher, currently a state assemblyman, and former assemblyman and current Congressional candidate Anthony Adams, both of whom left the party to become independents. Taking Out Dick Lugar

They will choose between party and country. That’s a stark assessment but true. On one side is a man who has made it his life’s work to build a cross-aisle consensus for keeping nuclear weapons out of the hands of terrorists and rogue states. On the other side is a man who mocks his opponent for such efforts and who talks more about fighting Democrats than fighting America’s enemies. For years Dick Lugar has been the leading Senate Republican on foreign policy, shaping post-Cold War strategy, securing sanctions to end South African apartheid and bringing democracy to the Philippines, among other things. His signature achievement, drafted with Democrat Sam Nunn, was the 1992 Nunn-Lugar Act, which has disarmed thousands of Soviet nuclear warheads once aimed at the United States. Enter Richard Mourdock, a tea party hothead attempting to defeat Lugar in the GOP primary. A cornerstone of his effort to oust Lugar is the six-term senator’s bad habit of bipartisanship — never mind that Lugar’s bipartisanship was in the service of protecting millions of Americans from nuclear, chemical and biological terrorism. Being here on the ground I will tell you that the tea party was not the reason Lugar lost. Hoosiers were just flat tired of him and wanted a change.In other races tea party backed candidates lost to the establishment candidates. If you look at the numbers in places where pub backed people did well Lugar didn't.It was just his time to go.

Yes, it's almost as if people think it's possible for some politicians to be better than others. Crazy.It was "his time" because he didn't believe in a complete refusal to work with the other side but keep pretending otherwise.

Baloney.This whole "'We need to work together' is the most important thing in the world" is stupid.I do not want my side to compromise on their beliefs, I want my side to crush your side, take their lunch money, and give them swirlies.The compromise hasn't worked, we end up with larger military in exchange for larger government, we get tiny tax cuts in exchange for doubling the deficit.I want someone to gut the government's budget, remove the government's planned take over of healthcare completely, and create an atmospere that government is a necessary evil, not the mommy and daddy to its citizens.Lugar thinks 'working' with democrats is the right thing to do..then that enough is all I need to be happy to see him go.I remember when republicans tried to 'work' with democrats after we took over a slim majority. We had shared chairmanships over some committees. All because we had an even number of representatives and a VP on our side who made us the majority. Then Jim Jefferies switched his affiliation to independent, and the democrats had a one person majority, they took complete control over all those same committees and began making changes based on their sides desires while ignoring my side.When we beat you in an election, then you losers do not have the right to demand we 'work with you'.And visa versa

please you lefties love to "work with the other side" where was that when your party bribed its way into the healthcare bill? wait thats right you were in charge then and there is no need to work together at that point.
