#3744564 World Cup Of Hockey 2016

Amazing comedian Anthony Jeselnik (one of the headliners this year) just crashed a show I was at and asked about the World Cup. He was pretty into it, though he's from the US (Pittsburgh). He thanked us for Kessel to my solo standing ovation.

Sorry if I m a bit late, but congratulations to the Penguins on an epic run...Back in December things were a bit bleak but great run and well deserved championship...Congrats to PK to winning his first cup.

Yup... I bit the bullet and grabbed a pair at $499 + 85 in fees... which is way too much money in $CAD... but now that it's the potential clincher, and the market has the cheapest tickets priced at more than double that... I'm feeling good about my decision.

Leaving Toronto at 8:35 tomorrow morning.

Having trouble deciding which jerseys to bring, and also plan on buying a Kessel jersey while I'm there. :)

Thinking I'll stick with my 1999 Jagr jersey until I get the Kessel.

I was dealing blackjack and had a few guys at my table that looked vaguely familiar. They were all bearded, friendly, and one had a cut on his eyebrow. 2 of them played at my table for a while, and I paid attention to things they said, like how they played at this one casino in St Louis. I casually asked where they were from - they replied California. I said, "Ah - here for the game? Good luck, but not TOO much, of course..." They laughed, and kept playing. They later mentioned something about Minnesota, and showed disdain for the casino chips that had the Pens logo on them. As they colored up, I finally asked, "Just gotta ask - you guys are Sharks, right?" The one guy laughed, said yeah, so I wished them luck. Seemed cool enough, although they didn't tip. Apparently it was Martin Jones and I think the other guy was Nieto. It was tough to compare the mental image with the beard-less roster photo on my break.
they didn't tip? Well now that's just bad karma.... :)

They practiced at Consol yesterday because the team Christmas party/family skate was after. But the Lemieux Complex is really great. They let fans in to watch practice on most days, and there is a full Pens Gear store there as well. Really nice.

If you find yourself back in Cranberry, check out the Lemieux sports complex there. I'm not sure about their schedule, but I know they practice there sometimes. Supposedly there are 2 full sized ice rinks inside - you can see it on 79 as you drive past.
They only practice at Consol or UPMC Lemieiux now. Their usually practice time is 11 am, although it does vary slightly. And the Lemieux centre is ALWAYS open to the public to watch practice. Nice stands, with seats inside and outside. Also a Pensgear store in the practice facility. One of the best parts is that the Pens management team is always around, and they're pretty impressive. I was sitting in the little cafe one day eating, and Bill Guerin, Mark Recchi, Jacques Martin, and Gary Roberts all came and sat at my table. The fans that go to practice are so used to it they don't bother them at all.
Oh, and all the players including Mario live up by the practice rink. Mario, Sid and geno are in Sewickly, Letang and Fleury are in Wexford, Phil is in Wexford. Worth the drive to see Mario's house. Sweet Jeebus...

Reminds me to much of one of the Islander jerseys

It shouldn't. It should remind you of the 1990s Pens jerseys, since they're identical.

I like it, but I don't really care all that much. The biggest problem with these jerseys is that I will no longer be able to tell who the idiot fans are that bought Crosby jerseys in this style from before he ever actually wore one.

At the beginning of all of these revelations, Ford's allies and councillors tried to sit down with him privately, and urge him to look out for himself, to get help, and to come back stronger than ever. There was no public jockeying, no political manoeuvring, etc. Ford flat out refused. He insisted that he 'has nothing left to hide'. That alone continues to be a lie, and therefore warrants the added pressure. The problem with the city council is that they are literally powerless to do anything. So it has become in the past few days, just political grandstanding. For those that just started following council in the last few days, 90% of council meetings are this kind of politicking. And, for the record, the Ford brothers have always been two of the very best at this. If the shoe was on another foot, these two would be like pit bulls on the throats of another councillor. But that's neither here nor there. That's the nature of the political game. They ARE childish, and they ARE almost entirely selfishly motivated. That's not news in Toronto or any other political arena.
But the fact remains: the mayor of the city continues to insist that he did nothing. And every nothing that he's denied has turned out to be something. The media is all over him. They should be. That's their job. If they weren't, none of this would be coming to light. And I don't think very many would deny that the citizens in Toronto have a right to know if their elected political leader is smoking crack, drinking and driving, being abusive, consorting with criminals, etc etc.
He is, in fact, my boss, since I'm an employee of the city. I was heavily involved with the budget process at city hall last year, and I learned a LOT about the mayor as well as other members of council. Nearly every decision that's made at council level is based on back room deals, 'you scratch my back' ideology that is key to getting anything through the process. To have a mayor that at the very least might be susceptible to blackmail is beyond dangerous.
It's a sad fact these days that much of the news content in varying media forms is based on the political leanings of the owners/publishers/broadcasters. The Star leans left, the Sun leans right, etc etc. I HATE that supposed news reports are almost always painted by a political brush. But it's very significant that EVERY media outlet has backed away from Ford, and is now calling for his head. It shows you that they are actually listening to the public, and distancing themselves from someone that is burying themselves. You have no idea how painful it is in the editorial offices for the Sun to have to get on the mayor and hold him accountable.
This is no joke. This isn't bullying. This isn't piling on. This is media hunting down news stories, using FOI to get their hands on police documents, and reporting it to the public. This is part of our system of checks and balances. If there was only one newspaper and it was controlled by the mayor's office, what do you think it would be saying?
And yes, much of the recently released info is hearsay. Reported by people IN THE EMPLOY OF ROB FORD at the time, and people that were and in some cases, still are, loyal to him. If you got called in by the police, sat down, and asked 'what did you see', it's your duty to report it. People wouldn't have a problem putting two and two together if a police report noted that Vito Rizzuto met with the President of the Hells Angels. And the public wouldn't complain if the news media reported that.
At the end of the day, this is a man that's unfit to be mayor. I am sympathetic to anyone that has addiction problems. But when you're surrounded by people begging you to get help, and you don't, then there's nothing that can be done. I don't blame ford for resisting help. He doesn't think he has a problem. One of the first symptoms of addiction: denial. That's not his fault. I have sympathy for Rob Ford the person as someone with a problem. But as a mayor? He needs to go. As of now, he refuses. I wouldn't be surprised to see another handful of issues coming to light, and then finally he steps away. You don't have to believe its true. But you shouldn't blame the media for reporting it. Just ask Tiger Woods. Allegations, hearsay... but he manned up, and did the right thing. Hopefully this works out that way too....
