Printing money to bail out anyone who asks is the road to this country's destruction. I've decided that if we continue we'll never dig ourselves out of the hole we're in. Throw fiat money at the situation is more like adding water to the hole hoping we'll float to the top. But I've added water to holes in the ground before and all you get is sticky mud.

It won't stop until people stop voting for legislators that grant bailouts (i.e., Republicans and Democrats). If you voted for one, you are guilty.

Don't see this happening anytime soon.

I didn't vote for any who voted for the bailout. Unfortunately, Cousin Max won without my vote though.

If Obama gets his way it will be happening very soon.
It wont be happening before he's inaugurated, the Republicans are blocking it big time. And if he turns that around in January it will be the first political error of his administration.

I don't know what you mean by soon, but when Obama is president this will most definitely happen. The Union burden on the Auto industry has caused its collapse, but that isn't enough. Now, that Detroit Automakers can't foot the heavy Union bill, they are lined up to keep the gravy train flowing from the tax payer. There will be almost unanimous support from democratic politicians who have their coffers filled by Union lobbyists every election season. This is exactly what the democratic party does, it is who they are and no one should be surprised.

We've already discussed this somewhat in this thread: http://www.fullcontactpoker.com/poker-foru...7&hl=fannieDon't worry though...LMD and Cope said everything is going to be OK and not to think there were bailouts coming.
Never even posted in the thread that I can recall. Thanks for playing. That being said, bailing out inefficient models is not the way to go. Of course, that won't mean dick during Obamas 4 years, which is good for my side of the coin.

This hits the nail on the head, this is all about the Unions. If it wasn't, then you just let the company reorganize under bankruptcy and come out stronger on the other end.

I meant I don't expect him to get it done before he gets in office.

yes, I don't think it is likely to happen before then, though Bush has behaved exactly like the democrats in this regard the last 8 years so who knows.

One comment I read is that the Auto companies are deathly afraid of what reorganizing under bankruptcy will do to their sales since they think that very few people will want to buy a new car from a company in bankruptcy. Would you buy from a company when there's a threat that they won't be around to honor any warranty etc ?

while this is a good argument, it doesn't seem to make any sense--trying to save the industry from the suicide it has basically already committed. the more I'm hearing about this, the less I really care about potentially losing one of GM, ford, etc.

Yeah, the more I read about this, the less I support an auto bailout. Cutting the fat and coming out of this a few years down the line with better and more efficient automakers in the US should help out economy in the long run. I think we need to keep a very close eye on how the transition from the present to the future auto companies takes place. I think the government should monitor these companies and make sure that they don't catastrophically fail and cripple the economy. If necessary, one of them should gradually go into bankruptcy and should be allowed to renegotiate union contracts and such. The government should ensure that pension plans are honored if a company goes down (for example) to minimize the effects of the fall of bit auto. But the government shouldn't artificially prop up failing companies.

We should cut out all the government fat, make it more efficient, and return the surplus to the people

Kind of like they were going to block the TARP package too? They will just get another couple billion of pork thrown in there and everything be a-ight.
