Well, technically it was up the day before the interview. And it would be a little weird for him to talk up something he did as the best thing ever on Grantland, wouldn't it? And and...an interview with the President is certainly the biggest get, but that doesn't mean it's the best.I'm such a Simmons apologist.

Anyone else following the shit storm that's being kicked up about the Dr V piece on Grantland? Holy shit, this is a back lash that can only happen in the era of twitter and social media. I'd love to hear Simmons actual reaction to this, privately and not his public apology.

In a nut shell, the report investigated this "magic putter" and found out in the course of it, that the female inventor of it was transgendered (she was also a liar and a fraud, lying about her credentials). The report "outed" the woman as being trans in the piece, and also while reporting it, to one of her investors. During the long process of reporting on the piece, Dr V committed suicide.

 

 

The author and grantland as a whole, has been getting murdered on twitter for it, and basically being blamed for hounding Dr V into suicide.

It's interesting how Dr V basically gets a pass for being a con artist but Hannan is a murderous monster and anyone who supports Hannan in any way is a bigot. The post about what Grantland did wrong by the ESPN baseball writer more or less says that it's ok(damn near encouraged) for trans to lie and steal or do whatever is necessary to perpetuate the lie, but never ok for anyone to out them under any circumstances.

It seems like gender-normal white men's lives are so weighed down by the double standards placed on them that it's become pretty much impossible to get through their lives without being accused of murder or slavery or something. It's gotten to the point where you can't even review a golf club without one of these monsters killing itself and threatening your career. I can't imagine how miserable it must be to be a Sports Guy in this day and age, and I think w/e our position is on the matter, we should try to empathize with the people who have to go through life with the stress of dancing through that minefield.

I don't profess to have a deep understanding of the trials and tribulations of the modern day Transvestite, but it seems to me that if you build your entire career on a house of ridiculous, extravagant lies, the subsequent crash and burn is inevitable. We can argue the morality issue of whether the reporter should have "outed' her posthumously, but as for the rest of it, the guy was just doing his job, a good job of it too. The people that suggest he should have just ditched 7 months of reporting as soon as he found out she used to be a man are just being ridiculous.

that wasn't the only issue though. THe tone of the article, the reaction to finding out she was a transexual, the use of pronouns are pretty offensive to the trans community. Also, Transvestite, is not the right term. Transvestites are men (often but not exclusively striaght men) who enjoy dressing in women's clothing. Eddie Izzard would be an example of that. A transvestite still identifies their gender as male. Dr V was not a transvestite.

 

 

Following the reaction on twitter is fascinating, and the trans and ally community on twitter is not having ANY of Simmons apology. Or Christina Krahl's criticism of it, calling her a token and a sellout. So, the question is to me, what apology is ever good enough? Earlier this month, Ani DiFranco scheduled a writers retreat on a former plantation in Louisiana ( one of the very largest and currently a 300 a night bed and breakfast, where white people can go and pretend the south won or w/e). Black twitter went insane, and she had a torrent of criticism. She cancelled and had a massive apology, and they KILLED her for it, ripping it apart, the apology causing almost as much anger as the Retreat itself. I was fascinated by it, and I wonder.. why the **** does anyone apologize? WHat is the point? People are going to play the apology parcing game, trying to figure out if it's legitimate or not ( And spoiler alert, the people you offended will NEVER think it's legitimate). I just don't understand why anyone apologizes for anything anymore, it seems like a profoundly useless act, but everyone INSISTS people do it, I guess so they can have another round of throwing tomatos at someone.

I finally got around to reading the article and I don't think Hannan did anything wrong. This person was not just lying to protect their identity; they lied to defraud lots of people. Simmons should have given the trans community the middle finger; the trans community can find better people to spend energy defending. Dr. V was a thief and a con artist, not a sympathetic figure.

 

Anyone outraged on twitter is probably a troll or a zealot; trying to placate them is a waste of time......so I agree with the "why apologize" stance.
