I didn't listen to their last album (and maybe the one before that one too, I've lost track...)I don't know anything about music either. I know a little bit about a few niche bands that I happen to enjoy, but I often have trouble articulating why I enjoy them. None of that really involves knowing about "music" in any technical or classical sense. I know a few people, musicians, who do know a little bit about music, and it's impressive to hear them speak. They're mostly jazz fiends, though, and I've never really been that into jazz.

Start smoking weed. I know how 'daunting' (read: boring) a genre like jazz can appear, but if you have friends who are really crazy about it then they should be able to recommend something you'd like. Seriously though: jazz. Also: weed.

Yeah, the musician friend I was referring to smokes a good amount of pot. I don't really, it's never been my thing, but I can definitely see how weed and jazz would go very well together.

Of course, Klosterman is correct that when Rivers was angsty and awkward, he wrote songs that were angsty and edgy; now that he is vapid and comfortable, he writes songs that are vapid and boring, and as a result, many fans feel betrayed and confused*.I enjoy Klosterman's brand of pseudo-academic tone applied to pop culture minutiae when it is well-executed (Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs), but it is certainly annoying when it fails (the one about metal, the one that was ostensibly about dead musicians but was really about him dating several women at once). I liked the Weezer excerpt enough that I may read that book as well.*He still has our letter, but we no longer have his song?

Saw them live at the Horseshoe in Toronto last night and Gedge put on a terrific show, even for someone who doesn't really know them as some do, hence I didn't approach this show with some kind of reverence.I had heard the name before, but a little while back I joined a "dad" band and was introduced by force to Brassneck and I Lost the Monkey, among others. Bottom line, Gedge delivers much epic strumming and some terrific lyrics about love, lust, revenge and bitterness with candor and humour.Influences: Smiths, New Order and, according to Wikipedia, The Fall, Buzzcocks and Gang of Four

So I finished my J Dilla project, and here it is. I'm not sharing this with any expectations that y'all will be at all interested. Uncooper tells me he's interested despite the size of it, and I figured I'd share it here (and not just in a PM) in case anybody else is into it. Maybe even some of our faceless guests. Anyways enjoy, or don't, see what I care!Dilloriginals Part ISo it's the original songs Dilla sampled from, interspersed with the songs he made using those samples. One right after the other, alternating. I also grouped things from the same album together, and generally have those tracks arranged in the correct order. It's not chronological across his career or anything though. I split it into 3 parts for ease. Combined it's about 1 gig and 181 tracks. Anyways I'm gonna give a little crib sheet on it. Parts 2 and 3 will follow shortly, and will probably have much shorter cribs. Part I has tracks from The Shining, Jay Stay Paid, OB4CL2, and also a whole bunch of stuff off the beat tapes and other singles and things. Some highlights:- Pretty much all the Shining stuff is really cool.- Toccata and Fugue in D minor like a muhfucker.- Is that really a Kenny Loggins track from the Caddyshack soundtrack? Yes, yes it is.- For some reason the way he did that old Janet Jackson track totally kills me. Come Give Your Love To Me.- Eleanor Rigby ---> House of Flying Daggers. Literally stupid.- Cris Williamson ---> The Red is amazing.- The Fuck The Police sample is brilliant. Like, his use of it. Some of the originals are amazing because they are amazing songs in their own right, and so compiling this has just been a cool way for me to find awesome music that I never would have considered before. And some of them are amazing because of how he used them. This is the latter. Note: also not all of these pairs are 'amazing.' A lot of them are just, 'cool,' or, 'oh yeah.' - The Laura Nyro song is great. - Thy Spy by The Persuaders is a brilliant song. Dilla's use of it isn't terribly enlightening (it's not bad, it's just not very exciting as it relates to the original), but the original song is the nuts. I peep to seegirls wearin' miniskirts(somethin') next to mecuz I'm a thigh spy!And it looks like that's it for part 1. Other parts will be posted soon (it's all done, I just need to up it), and I promise shorter write-ups! Unless you totally love my write-ups! Also note: in a few spots there are 2 'originals' in a row, meaning that he used samples from both songs in the succeeding track. There's also a couple spots where he used 1 sample across a couple tracks and I included both. P.S. They should be in the right order. Each track title is numbered for this playlist, so just arrange them by that.
