Dirtydutch 9
Hey Dutch, for someone who hasn't read any Rand and is looking to make a summer reading list, what would you suggest to start out with?If you want to read all of her work, I'd go Anthem, Fountainhead, Atlas Shrugged. If you don't want to commit yourself to 3000 pages or so, I'd go Atlas Shrugged, and then anything else. Shrugged will ruin every other Rand book for you, though.
SilentSnow 1
here are some objectivist pickup lines-"Did you know that nakedness is the highest form of psychological visibility?""You and I could create a whole other benevolent universe...""If you turn me down, you're anti-man!""Say, there should have been a chapter in the Romantic Manifesto about your ***!""Let me show you what sex qua sex can be.""Why don't you get undressed so I can check your premises?""Wanna let me come over and break your fireplace?""You're certainly practicing the Virtue Of Sexiness tonight." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Objectivist_philosophyhttp://andrej.com/objectivism/ - a funny guide to being an objectivist(at least i think its funny, most people probably wouldnt)if you are still interested in reading after that, read atlas shrugged. most intellectuals dont take objectivism too seriously and not just because they are antihuman, or whatever it is the Randites accuse them of. It's all the Rand you really need. Trust me, you'll thank me.THough Anthem is her best "literature," imo.if you are still interested in reading after that, read atlas shrugged. most intellectuals dont take objectivism too seriously and not just because they are antihuman, or whatever it is the Randites accuse them of.Most intellectuals wet their beds. "Most intellectuals wet their beds."I'm not sure if that was how it was meant, but that pretty much captures my sentiment. "intellectuals" are most often "liberal" morons who can't follow their irrational thoughts to their logical conclusions.

The fact that you put Rand and Vonneguat in the same literary hemisphere makes me want to kill you. It's a good thing I have a non sexual ( yeah, that's it..) crush on you , Dutch. And it's not so much the story of Atlas shrugged that I have issue with ( though I think the story is far fetched and absurd) as her insufferable writing style. I've never had such mixed emotions about a writer as Rand. On one hand I absolutely love ( though not completely agree with) the issues and ideology she addresses in her writing. On the other hand, I've never read an author that makes my *** twitch more to read.hFor one thing, she needed an editor, Shrugged was about 600 pages longer than it needed to be. well, maybe not.. what she needed was 600 pages of good writing to carry the story. "intellectuals" are most often "liberal" morons who can't follow their irrational thoughts to their logical conclusions.as an aspiring objectivist, you should really avoid calling people names. that is one of their biggest weaknesses- the refusal to honestly address their critics, instead resorting to name calling and dismissive self-referential logic that proves nothing. it is understandable i suppose. after all, intellectuals must be condemned by all marginal philosophies, since without some degree of acceptance by other smart people, that particular philosophy is usually doomed to ignomy.instead of "if you cant beat them, join them" it becomes "if you cant convince them, condemn them"

How ever, I think the vaccum that Objectivests seem to think "accomplished" people achieve success in, without any outside assistance, is just really a nieve way of analiyising the way the world works. Greatness often is thrust upon people ( see Dubya). Envornoment has much, much much more to do with one's "success" and "failure" in our society and economy than objectivists acknowledge. Also, Rand's insistance that Gold has objective value is just plain silly.

Dirtydutch 9
Philosophically, I'm not an objectivist. Politically, however, I'm about as anti governmental control as it gets. I really don't care if you (assuming you're on the productive end) do with your money, and I don't think helping people is fundamentally evil. The problem almost every non-objectivist-style political "thinker" will eventually run into, however, is that at the end of the day, for your system to work, you have to rob people. I don't understand why people are okay with this.
