Sure, it sucks a lot for the pitcher...sucks a LOT for the pitcher, I guess, since he probably lost out on his only chance to be a legitimate part of baseball history, but at least he can sleep well knowing he really should have had a perfect game and has gone a long way towards solidifying his position in the majors. Joyce not only has to deal with feeling terrible for blowing that call, but the fallout that's going to come from it. Link to post Share on other sites

On a semi-related note, one of my friends is named Jim Joyce, and he has always proudly accepted the umpire comparison. He was at softball with me, and had trouble comprehending how bad a call someone of his namesake could really make. After my 6th text and 3rd phone call, he started to get some grasp of it, but I wonder if my Jim Joyce will ever be the same. Link to post Share on other sites

If you are talking about that, then I agree that it's idiotic that some people don't vote for obvious hall of famers just because they have some weird philosophical policy not to vote for guys the first time.Also, Pete Rose used a corked bat. The quicker you can get around on a pitch, the longer you can wait on it, meaning you can see the ball better. It's not about making the ball go further.Right, it doesn't help hit home runs. I didn't see that mythbusters.I was trying to explain bat speed to my four year old at T-Ball practice the other day, I think he got it.So was Rose using the lightest bat allowable, and then added cork? When much better players haven't come close.Yeah, it's probably idiotic to wonder if idiotic sportswriters will stop being idiotic.Out of curiosity, what's your list of much better players who haven't come close?Edit: I can see one scenario where he comes close. The type of voter who wouldn't normally vote for a first-timer is also probably the type of voter who won't vote for McGwire.
