Day 4: Steam Whistle Brewing Companyfrom canadaSteam Whistle Brewing is a brewery in Toronto, Ontario. The company produces a premium pilsner lager packaged in distinctive green glass bottles and a non-twist cap. They only use four natural ingredients: spring water from Caledon, Ontario, hops from Germany, 2-row barley, and yeast. In 2004, Steam Whistle Pilsner was voted best beer in Toronto at the Golden Tap Awards. Steam Whistle has also been voted Best Toronto Microbrewery by the readers of NOW Magazine, Eye Weekly, and Xpress Magazine in Ottawa. The three founders are former employees of Upper Canada Brewing Company before it was bought by Sleeman's. The original name for the beer was going to be "Three Fired Guys Brewing Company" since they were all fired from Upper Canada Brewing Company when it was purchased by Sleeman; however, they chose Steam Whistle Brewing to evoke an image of steam rushing from a factory's whistle signaling the end of the work day. Embossed at the bottom of Steam Whistle bottles is "3FG" as an inside joke, referencing "Three Fired Guys".Steam Whistle beer is sold in Ontario at The Beer Store and the LCBO. Steam Whistle is also available throughout Alberta at retailers, bars, and restaurants. Steam Whistle is currently in the process of packaging their beer in cans as a means of further penetrating the western Canadian market. The brewery occupies Bays 1-14 within a building known as the John St. Roundhouse. Built in 1929 it was previously the home of a Canadian Pacific Railway steam locomotive repair facility, and operated as such until May 13, 1988. The John St. Roundhouse is designated a National Historic Site, and is owned by the City of Toronto. It is located within walking distance of the Rogers Centre and the CN Tower (just south of the Tower).chrozzo's ranking: 7/10alcohol content: not sure543462424_59e15e2e20_o.jpgsteamwhistle_out.jpgsteam-whistle.jpgsteam.JPG

Can you buy beer in regular stores there yet? years ago you had to go to special "brewers retail outlets" and get it. Canadian beer is pretty good stuff.
The following information is correct for Ontario, and applies mostly (no guarantees) to other provinces.Beer is ONLY available for home consumption at Beer Stores..a gov't run co-operative, basically, that only sells beer, both domestic and import.. and at LCBO (stores that sell hard liquor/wine and a more limited selection of beer, usually imported).Beer in Ontario, at least, is NOT sold at corner stores or at bars to take home. I believe it's sold at corner stores in Quebec..and in some western provinces it's available at bars to be brought home.In general, Canadian beer is a little stronger than American mass-produced beer, both in alc. content and taste. Many Canadians find mass-produced American beer a little thin and watery.Liquor laws in Ontario are still pretty strict, although the drinking age is 19. There's no free booze at casinos in Ontario and the "Happy Hour" concept of free or discounted drinks is illegal. Bars can't have any kind of sale or discount of alcohol. Usually food is discounted to get around this, half-price aps and such. Restaurants will offer "pitcher and wings" type deals as well.

When I went to vancouver 12 years ago I dealt with this. I had to go to a beer store, they closed at 7. I had to go to a liquor store, they closed at 5. So since it was after hours this girl I was hanging out with said we had to go to a bar and buy some 6 packs. And she said that I had to say something like "off shelf" or something like that to get the beer.It was very awkward. I have never bought beer like that before or since.

There are other ways that the bars work around this. They do offer cheap deals on booze... the law says you can not discount on booze BUT.... as long as the price you open the day at is the cheapest that you have the booze at all day then its legal. So if i wanted to have a 2$ drink night, all i have to do is make sure the opening price for drinks is $2 and is the cheapest i have it all day. You can also raise the price during the day, you just can make it lower then that opening price. Thats why alot of the time you will just have a cheap deal on 1 type of booze... so like $2 draft or $5 pitchers so that way they can just lower the draft and not bottle or liquor.

Day 4:Ayinger DunkelThe Ayinger Brewery (pronounced "eye-ing-gr"; German: Brauerei Aying) is a medium-sized German brewery located in Aying, Bavaria, about 25 km from Munich. Approximately 10% of Ayinger beers are exported, mainly to Italy, the United States, and the rest of Europe. Ayinger beers have been frequent award winners in international beer competitions.[1][2]For some years, a range of beer was brewed under the Ayingerbrau name by Samuel Smith's Brewery in Tadcaster, United Kingdom. Although the Ayinger logo was used, the recipes and range were different to those of the Ayinger Brewery. The arrangement ended in spring 2006, at which point Samuel Smith's rebranded the beers. Distribution of the Ayinger range of beer followed that summer.Dunkel (or Dunkles) is a dark German beer. Dunkel is the German word meaning dark, and dunkel beers typically range in colour from amber to dark reddish brown. They are characterized by their smooth malty flavour.[citation needed]Dunkel, along with helles, is a traditional style brewed in Munich and popular throughout Bavaria. With alcohol concentrations of 4.5% to 6% by volume, dunkels are weaker than doppelbocks, another traditional dark Bavarian beer. Dunkels are produced using Munich malts which give the Dunkel its colour. Other malts or flavours may also be added.Dunkels were the original style of the Bavarian villages and countryside. Lighter-coloured lagers were not common until the later part of the 19th century when technological advances made them easier to produce.Dunkels have a distinctive malty flavour that comes from a special brewing technique called triple decoction.Chrozzo's Ranking: 7/10Alcohol Content: about 5.8%cont_117.jpg347ayingerdunkel.jpgay.gif180px-Ayinger_oktoberfest.jpg
