What Do You Think Of Brian Townsend Now?

Recommended Posts

Brian Townsend latest blog entry:+1.858M, my biggest winJust finished playing a 18 hour session of 500/1000 and 1000/2000 NLH and PLO mix. I ended up 1.858 million dollars which beats my previous best day by 3x the amount. Over the last three days, I finished up 1.52 million dollars (I had forgotten that I spent 40K on the PLO w/rebuy tourney). The game started with Sammy and I playing HU which resulted in me starting out up about 1 million dollars. Then the game began to fill with Bobby Baldwin, David Benyamine, Patrik Antonious, Brandon Adams, Nenad Medic, Rafi Amit and a few others that aren't coming to me right now. For most of the day and evening it was David, Patrick, Sammy, Bobby and I playing.I was very impressed with Bobby Baldwin's play. He hardly ever plays poker anymore since he manages the Bellagio but he was sitting playing 4 handed at the end of the night with me, Patrik, and Sammy. Bobby was definitely holding his own and I was extremely suprised with how well he played. Most famous poker players are not very good and overrated -- this was not the case with Bobby; he had a great sense of people. One hand I raised UTG in PLO he called on the button and Sammy called in the big blind. Flop came TT4 and we all checked turn came a 5 and it was checked through again. The river came an ace and it was checked to Bobby who said "Sammy your ten is good." Sammy then sheepishly turned over a ten.I don't think the game is going to run anymore so I am probably going to head back to Santa Barbara either today or tomorrow. I really dislike it here in Vegas and can't wait to get back home. I have no plans or interest to play anymore events but may have to play a few more for business reasons. Also 1K/2K NL/PLO is a huge game and when it got 4 handed at the end of the night with Patrik, Bobby, and Sammy we were straddling every hand making it a 1K/2K/4K structure. At that point Bobby had about 1.5 million in front of him I had about the same, Sammy had about 750K and Patrik had 400K. The game was so big it's amazing and the swings associated are massive. I was up 1.2 million, then down to +400K, then back up to 1.8 million. Usually when the Big Game runs there is a cap of ~50BB that any one person can put into the pot. This protects people from losing too much in one hand and encourages more action as well as some weaker players to sit. We played uncapped and this is probably one of the biggest games to ever run. I really like playing uncapped as it's much more challenging to have money to bet on all three streets. Up or down?
A short 1K/2K session Just finished a two hour 1K/2K PLO/NLH mix game. It was three handed with David Benyamine and Johnny Chan. I won about 600K. I busted them on same hand when I flopped bottom set and a flush draw and was against a flush draw and wrap of Davids and a wrap of Johnny. With this win I made 2.15 million dollars in four sessions over five days. I am really getting tired of Vegas. I was planning on leaving much sooner but then got caugh up in the big game. I don't expect the 1K/2K mix game to run for a few more weeks so I plan on spending some time in Santa Barbara.he apparently beat sammy pretty good and the others that sat in to mix it up.

And it would be cool to know how badly Daniel wants to play him to take away some of that money.
I don't think DN would be too much of a favourite in a hu match vs Brian. I would assume Brian has the edge in PLO and probably in NLHE, although they're both excellent (obv). DN would probs have the edge in NLHE live

LOL no and not to disrespect Daniel who is a great player but Brian would definitely have the edge in both nlhe and plo be it online or live.No shame in that of course since there is only a small handful of players where there is a chance even that this wouldn't be the case.

Wrong. Do you think that Daniel has an exploitable/significant edge against Brian in NLHE/PLO mix? Brian is a NLHE specialist, and much like Joe Cassidy, DN might have a tough time handling Brian.

But the thing is, not only is Townsend a NLHE specialist, he's also a short handed/HU specialist, as far as I know. Why would you want to put your money on the line against a persons strongest game? Why would you take on Tyson in a boxing match when you could play him at chess? DN see's PLO as a better game of his than NLHE, so if they were to play it'd probably be in that.

Eh? As far as I can tell from his blogs I'd say it's the other way around.

Your right. From what he's said in the past and from what's been said about him by his peers, it's O8 that is his stronger game not PLO

I didn't say it was the strongest, I said it was stronger than NLHE. DN says his best game is Stud Hi/Lo.All of what I said is in the "Teaching Patrik Props" blog.EDIT: Although I am wrong about PLO being better than NLHE, as in the mix they don't play NLHE, on first glance I took it as a list of his best games period. But 7cs h/l is apparently his best game.

Well to be precise Cassidy is a LIMIT holdem specialist. Brian's best game is no limit.
I was making the point that: Joe Cassidy is a LHE specialist and DN had a tough time with him....Brian is a NLHE specialist (one of/if not the best online NLHE player) and DN would probably have a tough time with him. It was a comparision.

I saw Brian Townsend on High Stakes Poker and was very unimpressed. I've seen a couple of his cardrunner videos and have been unimpressed...However, I can't argue with some of the results he's been able to achieve in the last year or two.So, what am I missing. Has his game improved dramatically over the last year? Have I not seen the right cardrunner videos/ did high stakes not do him enough justice?

Anyone can look bad on one given session. Daniel didn't exactly look good last season, is he a bad player because of that. No results are the only way to do any sort of measure, but even those see variations. At least, his results would make you assume that he is good.

What was unimpressive about BT on HSP? I thought he played very well and came off as a better NLHE cash player than most of the big names on there.

I think the only reason you didn't think much of him on HSP is because he wasn't too active, as in there weren't many big hands with him at all. Another reason may be the fact that on HSP it's what, 8 handed? Whereas Townsend is more of a shorthanded specialist (unless I'm hugely mistaken). I've seen him on FTP quite a lot, and it's ALWAYS like he's at at least 3 HU tables with one or two 6 handed if he's only got one or two people HU (this is both NLHE and PLO, but mainly NLHE).
