The bolded part is evidently now public. I was not aware. An excerpt from the press conference during the donation pledge....   At Wednesday’s announcement, P.K. was filled with emotion as he talked

This is not the Leafs thread...we don't celebrate every little accomplishment.

Doesn't really matter though. If he creates 5 goals and costs his team 4 goals, he is still more valuable than a super shut down defenseman who never gives up a goal but who never creates a goal for e

I'm glad that the Leafs got Kaberle signed before the Markov contract. If Markov signed this contract before Kaberle did last year there is no way that the Leafs could have gave Kaberle anything less. I can't really argue about Markov's defensive play since I havent seen too many of his games but offensively he doesnt seem that good. He only scored 6 goals last year and the 43 assists he got had alot to do with Souray scoring 26.If Gainey was smart he would let Souray go and not make the same mistake the Leafs made last year. Those 26 goals look really good when it comes time to negotiate a contract and they go a long way to hide his play defensively. Im not his agent but I assume they would use the McCabe contract to argue what goal scoring defencemen should be paid.

maybe the reason he only had 6 goals is because he was with souray, a smart player plays to his teams strengths. if the habs were Souray less i think you'd see that goal number rise to around 15 i think. If you have a guy with a shot like Souray's on the point you look to try and get him the puck. His 43 assists is a sign of an intelligent, team player in my opinion.

LOL @ bolded. Perhaps Souray's 26 goals had a lot to do with Markov's passing.Markov assisted on 10 of Souray's 26 goals. 8 of those were primary assists. Markov would have received better offers had he become an unrestricted free agent. There is simply more demand than supply of d-man of Markov's quality. This is why I think Souray will sign elsewhere. There is bound to be a team that will overpay for his services more than the Habs are willing to overpay.

The word on the street is that the Canadiens have offered Souray somewhere around $4.5 per year over 3 years. I'm certain someone will pay more than that for his services so I'm thinking he is as good as gone.

Even in this day and age of salary caps (which btw is rumoured to be $48mill next year -- somehow...) someone would be willing to go that high?

I can see a team like the Oilets (yes, the Oilers) going after a guy like Souray and offering him 10 or 11 million over 2 years. I can also see a team like the Kings going after him.

Heh, ya.. I can see them needing a d-man (esp with that 5-forward PP setup they had going).

And with young (read: inexpensive) guys like Schremp, Cogliano and/or Gilbert possibly cracking the lineup the Oilers will probably be looking to add a couple of free agents to the mix. I'm thinking they'll make a play for Souray and possibly a player like Hartnell. Word is that Hartnell is looking for $3 million per though. Lowe may feel that's a little too much, but he's got to be looking to make some kind of positive move (in the eyes of casual fans) after losing Smyth.

Who is gonna take Sourays place if/when he leaves?I realize I often see the Habs situation's unclearly because of my Leafs bias but, the Habs defence of Markov, Komisarek, Bouillon, Streit, Dandenault, and Gorges seems pretty weak. It seems to me the Habs have Markov and then 5 depth defencemen. They'll probably need to go after a free agent defencemen but as you mentioned the lack of top end free agent defencemen leads me to believe they are gonna have to overpay for a defencemen to play with Markov.

With all due respect to the smart men running the Habs, this is an insult to one of the best (offensive) dman in the game last year...There is no chance he should sign with the HABS, I would think he would be offered a much higher salary than Markov...As a Leafs fan thats great.

If they can't sign Souray I think they'll go after someone like Hamrlik and give Yemelin a chance to crack the lineup. And Komisarek a depth defenseman? LMAO

Markov is a better all-around d-man than Souray thus he commands a higher price from knowledgable management in this salary capped world.Of course YOU would think he would be offered a much higher salary than Markov. It's great that being a Leafs fan has enabled you to find happiness in such small things.

I meant hes not good enough to be starting the powerplay. And dont you think the Habs would be better off overpaying for a guy like Souray than someone like Hamrlik who is gonna get overpayed because of the lack of free agent defencemen? Even though Souray is bad defensively I think the Habs are better off overpaying him than overpaying a guy like Hamrlik.

I wouldn't mind overpaying for Souray at all if it was for only 1 or 2 seasons. I hope Gainey doesn't give Souray $20+ million over the next 4 seasons though.

ok, NOW I think the Antropov signing was too much $$. I would have thought Higgins deserved more than that.
Wow...you and everybody. Speaks well for Buffalo's negotiations with Vanek, maybe they can get him for under $3 mill after all.

Is that THAT cheap for Higgins? I thought it was about right for a 24year old with his upside, but lack of a consistent, all around season of high quality play so far? (please, no comparisons to Antropov, Im not going there)

he was on a 13 game point streak and on pace for a terrific year before his ankle injury. Thats a hard injury to recover from and it took him a long time when he came back to find his stide again, by the end of the season we were seing sick moves and geat explosiveness again. Komisarek is gonna the captain of the habs one day, the kid is really learning to play a solid d game and gaining alot of confidence and lerning to throw his weight around. These guys are the gonna be core of the habs in a near future, good signings, but I would of liked to see longer contracts maybe... are they still going to be restricted when these contracts are up?BYE BYE SAMSONOV!!! and good riddance, he was such a downer to think about, I'm glad gainey dealt with that fool early. i can't wait to see which big name come to Montreal. The UFAs know we are looking for an impact palyer and despite the reputation Montreal has for big name palyers, some of them will be interested in playing for the best hockey city in the league. Idealy we would find a way to snag Lecavalier, that would be teh nutz.

Good riddance Samsonov!Cullimore ($1.9 million) will be bought out. Salmaleinen ($750,000) will probably end up in Hamilton. Is Gainey going after Briere or freeing up more money for Souray?

Are you implying that Montreal is a worse team with Souray in the lineup?
