I just want to tell everyone to shut up who thinks that the 'new' cast sucks and the show jumped the shark when the 'last' cast left.

I have heard this exact same line from seemingly everyone since the 80's. Shut up, you're a moron.

Please note, I also heard this in the early 90's about the new cast of Kevin Nealon, Adam Sandler, Dana Carver, Chris Farley, Phil Hartman, etc etc etc....

The current cast is HILARIOUS. (minus the stupid black dude from the Disney channel... they really need a Tim Meadows/Tracy Morgan type negroid)

Did anyone watch it tonight? awesome!
http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/clips/digital-short-im-on-a-boat/998982/, making fun of how all rap videos are filmed on a boat (with T-Pain) was awesome. "Never thought I'd be on a boat"... laughter ensues. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBCrsaet-2Q&eurl=http://robnroll.wordpress.com/2009/02/04/new-lonely-island-im-on-a-boat/)

Also, this dude from wedding crashers:

was the host tonight and he was very very funny.

Posted by: brvheart Saturday, February 7th, 2009, 10:28 PM

Dude 1: "How's the online dating going?"

Dude 2: - "Good, but you know, it can be a little weird. Everybody exaggerates, you know... Like I went to hook up last week at this hotel. So I check in and there's a knock at the door and it's like this 50 year old black guy."

Dude 1: "OH!"

Dude 2:- "Yeah, and he's PISSED. He's like, 'Hey, you're not a bodybuilder, you're a liar!'". I was like, "I'm a liar? What about you? You're not a 12 year old boy."

I agree 100% brvheart.

I love a lot of the current cast.

Posted by: Suited_Up Monday, February 9th, 2009, 6:54 AM

They've been doing a better job recently.... but has anyone noticed they only do like 3 or 4 skits total now?

It's just nuts. Last week when Malkovich hosted, they literally did like 3 skits. Filled in time with 2 Digital shorts plus something else pre-taped but I forget what it was. And weekend update was like 20 minutes long.

Posted by: Mercury69 Monday, February 9th, 2009, 7:10 AM

As long as the music acts stop sucking ass, I'm OK with SNL. I mean, Ashlee Simpson lip synching? That shite band that does that "Shut up and Let me Go" song? Give me a fckn break. Do some cutting edge stuff. get some old school dudes who haven't had a hit in years on the show to kick start their second coming.

Anything but tripe...

Posted by: Suited_Up Monday, February 9th, 2009, 7:13 AM

I skip the music part anyway.

Posted by: king_tanner Monday, February 9th, 2009, 12:09 PM

I like Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig, and thats it.

Andy Samberg isn't that great. His digital shorts are good, but I don't like him in the sketches. From the sketches I can remember, the only thing I really liked him in was the Mark Wahlberg talks to animals.

Posted by: Vandees Monday, February 9th, 2009, 12:38 PM

I've watched SNL for years, ever since high school in the early 90's. This cast is fairly funny, and for the most part this season has been fairly funny. However, Rosario Dawson's and this past week's were kind of disappointing to me. Maybe I'm expecting too much.

Yeah, the musical guests get TiVo'd and FF'd. There has been like 2-3 good musical guests the past 3-4 seasons. Its that bad. This past week it was absolutely mindboggling. I thought it was a skit for a second.

Bill Hader = hilarious. amazing voice guy.

Andy Samberg = great. digital shorts are awesome, and he's good in other skits.

Darrell Hammond = comedic legend.

Will Forte = hilarious.

Fred Armisen = hilarious

I also like Jason Sudeikis a lot. Seth Meyers does a good weekend update, and obv Kirsten Wiig is fantastic.

I kinda like Keenan Thompson too, to be honest.

The featured players are decent too. The sorta bigger girl has her momemts. Moynihan can be a bit annoying, though. The other girl is so-so.

All just my opinions, of course. I think I go a bit easy on them, because I'm not one of those guys who needs a reason to complain about everything.

I like him also, but he is hardly on at all anymore. In the last episode he had like a 15 second spot in one skit.

Like I said I like Hader and Wiig. I forgot about Sudekis, I like him too. Everyone else I think can be funny at times, but aren't consistent. Especially Forte and Armisen. But that can sometimes be the writers fault also. I don't like Seth Myers at all.

The writers are certainly an issue. Tina Fey leaving was a major blow.

Yeah, I would agree that some of the writing has been sub-par.

Posted by: CaneBrain Monday, February 9th, 2009, 7:15 PM

they can always find funny actors but they have not had good writing on this show since the Sandler/Nealon days.

Weekend update is almost always funny. Sometimes they have one good skit. Usually they have one good cartoon thing. Its just not what it was.....and that happens.

I don't accept this opinion. Watch the old shows. Very very rarely were there more than two great skits. It's the same.

Don't you love radiohead? I definitely do. If that is the case, Maybe I should give them another shot. The 2-3 minutes I listened actually made my body sore.

Fred Armisen is probably my favorite - he's totally underrated. His Obama is also excellent.

Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig are consistently very funny. Andy Samberg and Will Forte usually are also. And I have no hate for Keenan Thompson.

The writing though is very up and down. Some weeks the show will be great, and other weeks it will be mediocre or awful. It's certainly a huge step back up from about ten years ago when it was awful every week.

His Obama is terrible. It's not funny. It may be a decent impersonation, and I am not even really conceding that, it's not funny. Now Wig as Pelosi, that is funny.

Keenan Thompson is not funny at all.

I watched their performance and it was pretty bad, so I apologize for the jab. I've seen them live about 6 times and they've been fantastic every time. They're a really great group. I recommend checking out their albums (try Dear Science and Return to Cookie Mountain) and giving them another chance.

I partially agree. I don't think the current cast is that much worse than most, it's just that as we get older we start to see sketch comedy as the hackneyed, swollen corpse of a medium it has been for decades, and without nostalgia to hold it together, we are sort of shocked this shit is even on TV, and we blame it entirely on the cast. Some of us, anyway.

The only time I've laughed at this show in the last few years is when Will Ferrell comes back to do something. I only watched last night to see how Shakira shook her ass.

I have a weird thing with standup comedy and SNL. I think both are almost always terrible, but I will sit there and watch it, straight-faced, and just take it in. It's not even in a way that I would consider immediately cruel or ironic. I'm not really conscious of any sort of this-is-so-bad-I'm-going-to-patronize-you mentality; I just am fascinated by really, really bad art on a broad scale. In fact, I know that a lot of comedians talk about how they like to watch bad comics bomb, but to me, there's a greater joy in watching a terrible comic, with bad, unoriginal material, just bringing down the house. I could watch that all day, deadpan, and basically never tire of it. In fact, I have Comcast digital cable, and with it I have a lot of free On-Demand stuff. On the rare occasion that I watch TV, if I remember, the first thing I do is look for the local standup comedy videos they put on there. It's ecstasy.

That said, I never think to watch SNL, and can't remember the last time I saw it.

(Last time I watched it, though, I learned that Chris Elliot has an adorable, untalented daughter named Abby on the show now, which is something.)

Posted by: Dirtydutch Sunday, October 18th, 2009, 6:38 AM

...Not to say there aren't sometimes funny sketches. Much like most hack comics have a joke or two that is sort of funny. It's just that the laugh-to-embarrassment ratio is not strong.

Beauty & The Beast skit wasn't bad.

I agree with this completely. The last sketch comedy show I thought was funny was Mr Show. SNL is just too formulaic, and to constrained by being on cable television. I'm just not a big fan of impression based comedy in general, I think it's uncreative and by definition derivative. Once in a while there will be something legit funny ( like the absurdity of Samburg's Wahlberg impression, Hartman's great Reagan as a fake dummy real mastermind, celebrity jeopardy). It's not that impressions themselves suck, its that they never do anything funny with them.. it's mostly just standing around "hey look at me I'm obama" without doing anything with it.

I think it's easy for people to blame stuff on the cast, because those are the people we see, and grow attached to. But no matter how strong a cast is, it can't be saved by bad writing. and I don't even know if it's the writer's fault, from what I heard the whole writing process on SNL is insane and dysfunctional. That's why I think the video shorts are so much better than the live stuff, because they have their own schedule to make the videos. I feel if there was something legit funny on saturday night live, I'll hear about it and watch the clip on hulu. Watching a full episode of snl just bores me to tears, usually.

I have apparently lost all interest in the show. I've tried watching parts of about 2 episodes this season and couldn't go more than a minute without skipping ahead and then quickly just shutting it off.

Is there some reason that they decided to have a bunch of nobodies/people I hate hosting this season? Hosts so far this season, according to Wikipedia, including upcoming episodes:

Megan Fox (don't even get me started, she's the worst)\

Ryan Reynolds (ok, they found somebody I hate more than Megan Fox)

Drew Barrymore (I like her fine, but she's a little bit ten-years-ago.

Gerard Butler (who?)

Taylor Swift (why is she hosting and singing? I have zero interest in seeing her do either)

January Jones (who?)

Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who? oh that kid from 3rd rock, he's pretty decent I guess, although not exactly a big name)

Blake Lively (who? even clicking her name didn't help. Gossip girl, traveling pants, and traveling pants 2. wtf?)

Derek Jeter (I'll even give them this one. Obviously I hate him, but a lot of people don't and, for a sports star, he'll probably be a good host)
